A Brief History of Alaminos City
Early Settlers
- 1734
A Northern Zambal tribe founded the settlement of Suyang (in what is now Zaragoza, Bolinao).
- 1737
Suyang's residents moved to Barrio Casborran (now Barangay Baleyadaan, Alaminos City); the community grew quickly and drew more settlers from eastern Pangasinan.
Barrio to Pueblo
- 1747
Casborran broke away from its mother town, Bolinao, and became an independent pueblo.
- 1758
A dispute between the original settlers and newer migrants over politics and the economy ended in a fire that destroyed the town; survivors slowly returned to rebuild.
Casborran to Sarapsap
- 1764
Rebuilding was cut short when renewed conflict forced residents to abandon the town for Nansangaan (now Barangay Inerangan).
- 1766
Residents founded a new settlement on higher ground away from the coast and named it Sarapsap — today's Barangay Poblacion.
Pueblo to Municipality
- 1860
Sarapsap's growth caught the attention of Spanish Governor-General Juan Alaminos y Vivar during an official visit.
- 1872
In recognition of his popularity, the town was renamed "Alaminos" in his honor.
- 1903
Alaminos and eight other towns of northern Zambales were folded into Pangasinan province; Francisco Reinoso became the town's first Municipal President.
- Postwar
Alaminos rebuilt and its economy recovered after World War II.
- 1991
The municipality was reclassified from fourth class to third class.
- 1997
A further reclassification to first-class municipality followed a 338.5% rise in gross income.
City of Alaminos
- March 5, 2001
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Republic Act 9025, converting Alaminos into a component city.
- March 28, 2001
Voters ratified the change in a plebiscite, with 85% voting "Yes," making Alaminos Pangasinan's fourth city.
Rebuilt From Disaster
The town was burned down in 1758 amid a dispute between settlers, then displaced again in 1764 before finally taking root as Sarapsap — today's Poblacion — in 1766.
Named Before He Was Governor-General
Alaminos was named in 1872 to honor Juan Alaminos y Vivar, a year before he actually became Governor-General of the Philippines (1873–74).
Home to the Philippines' First National Park
The Hundred Islands, off the coast of Barangay Lucap, were declared the country's first national park by President Manuel L. Quezon in 1940.
